The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air appeals to teens because of Will's street- nature. He brings a different energy to the upper class Bank family from Philadelphia to the mansions of Bel-Air. For example if we look at this image of Will and Carlton and compare their costumes; Carton is smartly dressed in plain beige and browns with this cap forward facing, while Will is dressed in bright greens and pink with his hat twisted on his head. The sitcom constantly integrated relatable themes by tackling important social issues such as drug abuse, gambling addiction and racial identity. This suits the 30-40 y/o and teenage audience who can be inclined to face these issues as they mature into adulthood. Like all family sitcoms that aired at this time, the Banks had many comedic values; however Fresh Prince of Bel Air stood out on TV at the time because the Banks actually felt like a real family. A teenage viewer can feel comfortable watching the show tackle relatable social issues with their family because we feel like we can identify our own traits in the characters. The 50-60 y/o demographic is suited with this show as the parents are trying to deal with their kids growing up in a different environment than they did, something every parent will face. The sitcom transcended a contrast in class using comedic techniques that constantly kept the viewer amused. This suited an extensive audience of both male and female that spanned across the globe.

The "Perfect" music video by Ed Sheeran appeals to both male and female audiences because the main theme is love. Ed meets the girl he still clearly thinks about after what seems a long time since they were last together. The snowy settings they are on create a romantic warmness to the couple which appeals to a large audience. The video suits teenagers because the characters are young and in love, giving the teenage audience a relationship to aspire to. The music video also appeals to both 30 year olds and 50-60 year olds because a nostalgic aura reminds them of being young and in love. I think shots like this one in the video, where Ed is watching the girl he likes in the back of the car is something a lot of guys can relate to. Guys often like to just stare at the girl they love because it just makes them smile and we can tell this by the way Ed looks at her in the mirror.

The extremely successful animated franchise 'Shrek' stood out from other films at the time because it capitalised on the fairy tale genre by taking well known characters from books and integrating them into a comedic exciting plot. The film appeals to teens for a number of reasons. Classic characters like Donkey and the three little pigs remind us of being young children giggling at these eccentric animated figures. The film sends the message that it's okay to be different and being happy with ons self is very important. I think this appeals to teens with self confidence issues in a subliminal way and shows that individuals that are set aside from the norm will always find a place to fit in. Actors like Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Antonio Banderas attract an older audience due to their performances in other films. I think their comedic personas drew the 30-40 and 50-60 demographics towards the film to wonder how these actors take on a children's fairytale character. Shrek also integrates adult friendly that flies straight over the children's heads adding to the humour. It goes without saying the characters were portrayed excellently and appealed to all the demographics I want to target.

over 30 you're more comfortable being yourself more often rather than changing to please other people,” 35-year-old Sarah* told The Independent.
My research into the 3 demographics shows people become more comfortable with themselves as they get older rather than changing to please other people, which can be very common in teenagers. The traits of a teenage include perfectionism, need for approval and concerns with body image while 30-40 year olds are likely to be more self aware, mature and have an understanding of their identity. This suggests as we get older from teens to 30s, we start to really identify who we are and what makes us who we are. Personalty becomes more consistent as we move out of our teens and early 20's. Hobbies are defined by personality but also differ with age. I think the teen generation of today have more time to see and talk to their friends so a lot of hobbies are done in groups rather than on ones own. Today we have to be in education until we are 18, meaning 17 and 18 year olds have as much free time as 12-16 year olds, so teens are often found doing their hobbies with friends in their free time. For example, my Dad got a full time job as soon as he left secondary school and my grandad joined the navy when he left secondary school. In contrast, I spent that summer skating with my friends while attending my part time job once a week. So teens today have a lot more time to spend on their hobbies than the other demographics I am targeting.

questions
- How old are you?
- Are there any films where you recall the editing standing out to you?
- Why did it stand out?
- Would you prefer a film that shows the story in one clear consecutive narrative or something the brake those rules and pulls you in and out of "real time"

Primary research
My aim for this project is to create an edit driven, opening sequence to a film that is suitable for 3 demographics; teens, 30-40 year olds and 50-60 year olds. This survey is to establish the demographic of each individual that takes the it as well as what style of editing they would like to see in my production. I asked them to recall any opening scenes that they identify to have effective editing techniques as well as their preferred genre. My results will tell me the genre, the age as well as their input into the content they want to see in an opening film sequence. This will help me write a proposal that explains what I need to devise to create a production that is suitable for all 3 demographics.
My mum then sent out the survey at her work place to gain responses from the older demographic while I asked students to visit my website and take the survey on here.

what they want to see
As you can see in the illustrations on my infographic, each target audience has determined what they would like to see in my film. Teens want a film aired on Netflix with comedic and romantic elements with a traditional editing structure. 30-40 year olds would like to see a drama film aired on netflix with a traditional editing structure. 50-60 year olds would also like to see a drama aired on Netflix but with a conventional editing style. I took into consideration what my focus groups said, and I have decided to create a short drama opening to a film which will be aired on Netflix in Summer 2018. The reason I chose to pick a conventional editing style is because all my focus group interviewees suggested I do so and I would also like to challenge myself and use imagery to convey ideas.

The opening sequence to "Trainspotting" appeals to the teenage audience of today for a number of reasons. Firstly, if we consider that shift forward (or shift back) in fashion over the years; teens have started wearing clothes and styles worn in the 90s and I think this opening sequence is a great representation of that era. The camouflage cargos, the bright multi-tonal shell jackets; all the now 'vintage' items we teenagers see on depop are being worn in this film. The film opens with a chase creating a fast pace teens are instantly drawn to - as soon as the film starts the main character is placed into a problematic situation we want him to get out of. I think this appeals to teens because it is like jumping on a rolling coster that shoots off as soon as you get in, tens are looking for that thrill on the screen. The film's main theme is drug addiction, particularly herion, which I think the editors tackle really well within minutes of the film. The contrast in seeing the opening as an a comedic introduction to the characters with the realisation that they are drugs addicts living disgusting lifestyles I think hits the audience quite hard, particularly teens who are prone to witness drug problems in their late teenage years. I would like to use match cuts similar to the ones used in this sequence to create a deeper meaning in my work, particularly in my final major project where I use these techniques to show my understanding of how editing techniques can be used to create meaning.

The 'Political Prisoner' scene is an effective introduction to Tony Montana's character. His comedic attitude transcends his lack of fear to the American police and tells the audience he is different to his fellow immigrants. This would appeal to male 30-40 year olds because Tony represents a force of drugs and violence the other characters just can't see yet. As a we get older, we start to lose our rebelliousness so when a film brings in a cocky force with a comedic attitude, a male audience is drawn to the film. The use of 360 degree shot is effective because each officer throws a different question at Tony and we get to watch him evade from the truth on the spot. The use of long shots adds to the suspense of the officers trying to catch Tony out. For example, we cut to a close up of the policeman investigating his tattoo, the camera slowly moves away from the subject and to the right. This is because the officer thinks Tony is some sort of assassin, the police go to get rid of him but when Tony jumps up to defend himself, the shot cuts. This is the editor using a varied length of shots to add suspense. I would like to vary the shots used in my productions to create tension,

In this scene from The best Marigold Hotel (2010), Judi Dench plays Evelyn who is teaching the room full of call centre employees how to minimise the time they spend on the phone with their customers. I think this scene is quite empowering for women aged 50-60 because it Evelyn is at least 20 years older than all the characters in the room yet she has their complete attention. Female audiences of this demographic can look up to Evelyn as a character in this situation because she is the only English person in the room who appears to be a heavy influence on the staff at the work place. If we look at the mise en scene in this clip, Sunaina is the key point of focus in the crowd filled shot representing a crowd of sheep that need guiding in order to succeed. Evelyn on the only hand, is the only person in her mid shot (indicating independence and authority) and is stood infant of a map of the world. This suggests Evelyn is their foreign angel come to get their business back on track . Evelyn's composure is testing in this clip when Sunaina ask her a question about her husband. After Evelyn states her husband died, there is a short pause before Sunaina tries to respond. Evelyn quickly buts in to apply that to the lesson she is giving. This is Evelyn regaining control of the situation, something the audience, particularly the females, admire her character for.
