outside broadcast - Sam
Outside broadcasts is when recording equipment such as cameras, microphones , audio mixing equipment are taken away from the studio and used in a remote environment. Normally they are live but can often be pre-recorded for live television/radio. This is called 'As Live' and can avoid editing and delays.
The issues faced when shooting and outside broadcast include:
The issues faced when shooting and outside broadcast include:
- Weather - wind can interfere with connection and audio recording, rain can damage equipment.
- Electricity - remote areas will not have electricity
- Cabling - this needs to be safe and clear in sight so there is mo danger.
- Time - set ups can be time costing as well as tear down
- Lighting - environment needs to be correctly lit. (this is irrelevant as we are making a radio broadcast)
Solutions:
- Weather - To ensure expensive equipment is not water damaged, record under shelter or buy waterproof protecters. Another option is to record on days when it doesn't rain; a production plan and contingency plan will help you work around weather problems and ensure the outside broadcast stays on course.
- Electricity - Sufficient and reliable power is needed to run equipment so bring generators and avoid drawing power from the local areas
- Cabling - Ensure all cables are properly wrapped so there are no exposed wires on et. Try to cover the cables safely so they are easy to walk over. If cables are exposed, make them clear with colours and warning signs.
- Time - arrive early to set up and finish within schedule to allow for tear down
- Lighting - irrelevant as it is a radio broadcast.
Plan of action
For the outside broadcast we will be investigating the development of the new Henley Skatepark due to be finished July 2017. The new skatepark has been expected for almost 6 years now so we think it will be interesting to see why it's taken so long and what the people of Henley Town think. There are many people we can interview; the council behind the parks development, young people who will be using the skatepark and the public in Henley who may or may not know the town is expecting a new skatepark. In this case we will have to produce an 'as live' broadcast so there are clean cuts between interviews and we have full control of what the broadcast will contain. If the broadcast was live we would have to have all our interviewees in one place and have to keep switching between them. This is impractical as we cannot guarantee how long our interviewees will speak for when the broadcast needs to be between 2-3 minutes. We should both organise dates for interviews and interview members of the public at random. With their consent, we will have a wider range of opinions with no bias.
equipment list
Since our broadcast will be 'as live', our equipment list will be much shorter than one for a live shoot. This is because we don't have to send the live recording to a studio where it is broadcasted straight away.
- Microphone
- Audio storing device
- Batteries
- Earphones - to listen to what is being recorded
- Plastic sheet — if the conditions we want to record in are affected by wind, we could position our interviewee behind the sheet and record audio from there so the audio is not affected.
- Umbrella - if the conditions we want to film in are affected by rain we can protect the few bits of equipment we have with an umbrella.

editing process
To edit the outside broadcast together I used Logic Pro X. I started by moving all my recorded footage to a folder and renaming each track for preference. Then, as the project progressed, I added each track at a time until the broadcast was complete. As I was using the same microphone for the presenters segment as the interviews, the location in which I was recording sounded the same whether I was outside or not. This made the broadcast seem like it was recorded in one location, so I added background noise in my interviews to exaggerate the fact they were outside.
