Personal statement (ucas)
I have experimented with cameras to create visual content from the age of 11. In that time, filmmaking has become my passion. I am applying for a Film Production course to explore areas of film and TV in depth at a professional level. I would like to be able to use industry standard film equipment, learn from professionals and create work influenced from what I have learned. By refining these skills over the course, I hope to come out with a diverse portfolio that transcends my knowledge of film production and theory. I love filmmaking because it is an intensely personal form of art; you are capable of captivating complex ideas and applying them to small, intimate stories. You can use image to tell your own story that invites the viewer to a world with characters they can relate to. What I find interesting is how the way a story is being told can influence the audiences emotions. A films narration often encourages the viewer to make their own sense of a scene/shot/sound; when successful, it is extremely effective. I would like to visually encourage my audience to identify themselves in the action that takes place both on and off screen. Often films that end in tragedy leave the viewer with a reminder that happy endings are not real and are just a concept we have created, but how did the film lead you to hope that it would end well? I think a successful film should leave the audience thinking about what they just watched and how it could effect their lives. That is what I was to achieve in visual production. Some of my favourite films include Quadrophenia, No Country for Old Men and Supreme's 'Cherry' because of their successful combination of narrative and narration. The stories are extremely gripping while the shot selection and editing style tell them in an ascetically pleasing way which I love. I am a student with a creative skill set that reflects in my portfolio; there are a number of productions I have devised both in and out of college. These include a film noir, skateboard films and a collection of adverts created for the work wear company Dickies; a concept for the final major project of Creative Media Production, year one. The video editing process is one of my favourite elements of filmmaking and I am comfortable using the programs Adobe Premiere Pro and Final Cut Pro. If I am not doing college work, I am working on my next skate video with my friends. I am currently studying Creative Media Production at the Henley College. The subject is a coursework based meaning that it has prepared me for a Film Production (BA) which involves a lot of hands-on practical work. While filmmaking as an art is very personal, the CMP course has taught me to work in teams and explore different roles within the production process. I think this has benefited me because I have learned to listen to my peers and create pieces of work that takes a group effort. The course also requires deadlines to be met, analysis of both my own and other people's work as well as detailed research into the stimulus
set. From 2007 to 2012, I attended stagecoach performing arts school. I believe it has had a drastic effect on my communication skills and gave me an insight into the acting side of film. This has made it easier for me to work with actors on productions as they understand the performance I want to see on camera. My other passion is skateboarding. Although it is not a sport where there are teams or points systems, the fact that I have skated over a 5 years shows I can make commitments and progress quickly. I take interest in how skateboard companies create effective videos to promote their brand as well as their skate team. In my spare time I skate with my friends and film out in the streets. When I film I try to capture as much as I can because it gives my work realism and shows skateboarding in it's true colours; it is not just about what tricks are landed, it is about character, talent, style, culture and lots of fun.
